Dominique: Hi, I
am Dominique Anstis
Charlotte: And I am Charlotte Mole-Morgan
Dominique: We were the South-West Manchester
District's representatives at FURY National Assembly, 2004.
Dominique: Deflated after two train journeys
and a day at college, we arrived at Swanwick Conference Centre feeling tired
only to be rejuvenated when we were greeted with our sleeping accommodation.
We were sharing a family room, with one double bed and one single, en suite
shower and toilet and tea and coffee making facilities! It was luxury! After
plugging in the hair straightening irons and touching up make-up we were ready
to face the world again! We also felt that this year's venue was more satisfactory
in terms of relating to other representatives and discussing motions prior to
voting on them.
Charlotte: Later on we joined in the team quiz,
calling our Stockport and Manchester group the "Northern Lasses" (with
the exception of one Welsh delegate!) and although we struggled a little in
the sport round, we thought our limerick about the FURY chairs was fantastic!
Dominique: The next day was full of motions, debating,
voting, and much needed tea/coffee breaks. We confirmed the task group on membership,
discussed a resolution on the roles of representatives from districts on the
district council and talked about the use of paper involved in advertising,
promoting and briefing for FURY. One motion, which particularly caught our attention,
was one brought to us by a certain Ben Munyaneza who other than bringing the
assembly alive, made interesting and honest comments on many aspects of the
URC's life. His motion was related to the style of worship and use of hymns,
accompaniment and songs. He made a very strong case for modernising the worship
and the use of livelier, more varied songs in worship. We debated and discussed
this, finally making an amendment changing the wording of the motion, and it
got passed with a large majority.
Charlotte: After an interesting workshop on 'Apathy'
in which we learned about lobbying and making our views known and were introduced
to the BYC (British Youth Council) we were presented with the 'Catch the Vision'
mission statement, broken down and explained to us by Lucy Brierley, member
of the 'Catch the Vision' steering group. This was interesting, and made all
the confusing jargon and obscure statements more accessible to us.
Actually, as I mentioned to some people at Assembly, although this year was
my 3rd experience of FURY Assembly, it was the first time that I fully understood
the process and fully appreciated the content of the motions, which, in my opinion,
is too late, as your 3rd year tends to be your final! I believe that the full
potential of the representative can only be reached if the foundations achieved
by 1st and 2nd visits are built upon, and a rep can only give back what they
have got from FURY if given the chance to attend again. This year I seriously
considered the role of FURY Council and thought about standing as a representative
on FURY Council. After much thought I decided I wasn't yet ready, but hope to
feel able and confident to stand another time.
Dominique: So finally, thank you for allowing us
to go another year and giving us the pleasure of meeting old friends, making
new ones, and learning more about the way the URC works. We know that this is
supposed to be our last year, but if no other young people from the District
come forward and you need someone to go...just remember we are here!
