A Prayer Calendar is something new for our District. It grew out of the ‘Towards a District Mission Strategy’ event of November 7th 1998. One of the positive outcomes of that morning was a greater appreciation of the situations, strengths and needs of the different churches. A subsequent District Council felt that a Prayer Calendar would provide a way of maintaining and deepening that understanding.
As you read about the concerns of each church and see the names of the officers and Elders, you will feel, I am sure, that the work that went into producing the information was worthwhile. It will enable us to think about and pray for one another more meaningfully.
Each church must decide for itself how it can make best use of this Calendar – within Sunday worship, but also at a Prayer Group, at the beginning of a meeting, or in personal prayer. For those who feel that it would be good to unite in prayer with other District churches, a table of dates and churches is to be found at the back of the booklet.
By praying for each other in our varied situations, we affirm our solidarity with one another as fellow Christians. We respond to Jesus’ prayer for his disciples that we might be one and, as we pray, we share in the mystery of mutual love and community which we call God. The effects may surprise us!
Susan Armitage, District President.
November 1999.

WOODLANDS, ALTRINCHAM WITH BUCKLOW
HILL.
See the Webpages: Woodlands
The church has 26 members and 9 associates.
Woodlands is a suburban church in a residential area on the outskirts of Altrincham. The church building was erected in 1972 to continue the witness of the former Broadheath Congregational Church. Woodlands has Brownies, Guides and a small Boy’s Brigade company. The members have served the church well, but in common with many similar churches, numbers have fallen to a critical level. Now the church is the centre of "The Woodlands Project", a study of urban church issues.
Bucklow Hill church, founded in 1826, set in a small community in rural Cheshire, has recently been closed.
Please pray:
Lord God, we pray for the congregation of our church in Altrincham, Woodlands, that they might be blessed with growth in faith, numbers, insight and strength. May the plans for a joint project with Northern College come to fruition and the experience gained prove helpful to the pastorate, to theological students and to other churches in this District and beyond.

Founded in 1872, the church has been in its present building for 48 years. It is situated in a large council housing estate near a major hospital and not far from Ringway airport. Most of the church members are retired and the church faces the challenge of a decline in numbers of the first generation residents on the estate, and a recent increase in the numbers of younger people moving in. There are strong links with all the other denominations through the local Churches Together group.

The church has 102 members, 24 associates and 15 children at worship. Trinity, a friendly caring congregation, celebrates its 132nd anniversary on Advent Sunday 1999. A ‘2000’ Group is currently exploring how the church can adapt and respond to changing circumstances. The buildings and grounds are well maintained and are used by a variety of community groups. Links with other churches are maintained through Altrincham Christians Together.
